Over the last 18 months, I’ve learned more about cubes than I ever thought I would! Here are a few of these lessons:
Lesson #1: It’s NOT a Rubik’s Cube!
The first cubes that were made WERE Rubik’s Cube, but there are other brands of cubes, and those brands are cubes designed for speedcubing. A 3x3x3 may be referred to as a Rubik’s Cube, but that’s like calling all tissues Kleenex! The kids have cubes in a number of different brands, so we refer to them by their size rather than brand.
Lesson #2: There are many different sizes of cube
Nat has cubes up to a 7x7x7! He even has a 1x1x1 cube (we keep joking that it’s actually a die without the numbers!). He can solve all of them. Until he started cubing, I had no idea there were different sizes of cube.
Lesson #3: There are other shapes
This goes hand in hand with different sizes of cube, there are also different shapes such as the Pyraminx and Megaminx. There are also what my kids call “Weird” cubes such as void cubes and gear cubes!
Stay tuned for further lessons about cubing!
